Wall turbulence control is a major subject, the investigation of which has significant industrial, environmental and fundamental consequences. This book deals with recent advances in active and passive turbulent skin-friction control over the past two decades.
The importance of drag reduction control in aerodynamics can be demonstrated with one simple example: just a 2% drag reduction is sufficient to transport 5 extra passengers on a flight from Paris to New York. Furthermore, a drag reduction of 10% would result in a saving of more than 50 billion US dollars in worldwide commercial maritime transport. This explains the huge amount of experimental, numerical and theoretical investigations into turbulent drag reduction that have been published in recent decades. As passive means such as riblets possess limited drag reduction capacities, the focus has generally been put on active strategies in recent years.
This book gives an updated view of the research on this topic, including passive control (riblets, large eddy break up devices, hydrophobic surfaces), control by local unsteady blowing, electromagnetic control, optimal and suboptimal control methodology, linear control and control using adaptive methods (neural networks).

About the Authors
Sedat Tardu is Associate Professor at Grenoble University in France where he teaches turbulent shear flows, heat transfer, fluid dynamics, and chaos. His research area includes canonical and non-canonical wall turbulence, active and passive control of near wall turbulence, unsteady wall layers, mixing and micro-mixing, and microfluidics. He has been a visiting researcher at several universities and is the author of more than 200 papers in peer-reviewed journals and international conferences, and of several book chapters.
