This book provides a comprehensive overview of the state-of-the-art lasers for photonic integration into silicon chips. The need for efficient laser sources on silicon is presented, motivated by the development of on-board/on-chip optical interconnects and the different integration schemes into microprocessors are discussed. The authors give descriptions of Group IV-based lasers, followed by a presentation of the results obtained through the bonding approach (hybrid III-V lasers). The monolithic integration of III-V semiconductor lasers is then reviewed, and a discussion of the different kinds of cavity geometries benchmarked with respect to their potential integration on silicon in an industrial environment is finally proposed.

About the Authors

Charles Cornet is Assistant Professor Hab. at FOTON Laboratory, INSA Rennes, France. He is a specialist in MBE material growth, the structural and optical properties of III-V semiconductor nanostructures and devices, and their integration on silicon.
Yoan Léger is a CNRS researcher at FOTON Laboratory, INSA Rennes, France. He is a specialist in the optical spectroscopy of semiconductor nanostructures and nonlinear optics in photonic devices.
Cédric Robert is a researcher at the Laboratory of Physics and Chemistry of Nano-objects (LPCNO), INSA Toulouse, France. He is a specialist in optical spectroscopy and the fabrication of optoelectronic devices based on III-V and two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenide materials.
