Due the proliferation and convergence of different types of wired, wireless and mobile networks (such as WiMAX, Wireless Mesh Networks, WPANs, WLANs, Sensor, etc) and cellular-based networks, this book deals with the objective to develop efficient global control mechanisms that can maintain end-to-end QoS requirements to maximize network resources utilization, and minimize operational costs on all the types of wireless-mobile networks.
From a number of angles it appears that we have reached a point in the impressive development cycle of the Internet that now requires some major change. However, research and development in these areas is still at an early stage and the space of potential solutions is far from being explored. This book sets out to provide comprehensive coverage of Quality of Service aspects for Heterogeneous Wireless/Wired Networks and Optical Networks. The main focus here will lead to the building of end-to-end QoS which must be flexible enough to deal with issues arising inside heterogenous infrastructures across multiple management domains. The global solution must be able to handle both the different QoS provisioning mechanisms and the service specifications. Two main areas are covered: (1) maintaining QoS requirements in order to maximize network resource usage, and minimizing operational costs on all types of wired-wireless-mobile networks used to transport traffic, (2) mixing the QoS associated with home, access and core networks in order to provide QoS/QoE expected by users of new services.

About the Authors
Abdelhamid MELLOUK is co-Head of SCTiC Research Team at LiSSi laboratory and Head of Networks and Telecommunication (N&T) Department of IUT Creteil/Vitry, Paris 12-Val de Marne University (2000-2007). His general area of research is in quality of service in high-speed wired/wireless network. He investigates particularly the use of artificial neuronal intelligence together with biologically inspired techniques such as reinforcement learning, to control network behavior in real-time so as to provide users with the quality of service that they request, and to improve network provide robustness and resilience. He is Senior Member of IEEE, Associate Editor for Wiley’s Journal of Security and Communication Networks, Elsevier’s Journal of Network and Computer Applications, SIWN’s ITSSA Journal and Inderscience’s International Journal of Internet Protocol Technology. In particular, he was a guest editor-in-chief of special issues as IEEE Communications magazine or Springer-Annals of telecommunications. He is/has chaired (or co-chaired) more than 10 international conferences and symposia including the well known IEEE ICC Wireless Networking Symposiums and the IEEE GLOBECOM Communications Software and Services Symposium.
