The term machinability refers to the relative ease with which a given material can be machined, using appropriate tooling and cutting parameters. Currently, several criteria are used to evaluate machinability, the most important of which are tool life or tool wear rate, cutting forces or power consumption, surface integrity, limiting rate of metal removal, and chip shape. In general, the factors that typically improve the material’s performance degrade its machinability. Therefore, machinability is affected by the properties of the workpiece material, tool material, machine tool, fixture, cutting fluid and cutting parameters. Machinability can be difficult to predict because it has so many variables. For this reason, an improvement in the technical ability to predict machinability is very important for modern manufacturing industries.
This book presents a collection of examples illustrating the state of the art and research developments in the machinability of advanced materials. Chapter 1 presents the concept of machinability. Chapter 2 covers milling burr formation and avoidance. Chapter 3 contains information on the machinability of titanium and its alloys. Chapter 4 is dedicated to the effects of alloying elements on the machinability of near-eutectic Al-Si casting alloys. Chapter 5 covers the machinability of hard materials. Finally, in Chapter 6, an investigation on ductile regime machining of silicon nitride ceramics is presented.

About the authors


J. Paulo Davim is Aggregate Professor at the Department of Mechanical Engineering of the University of Aveiro, in Portugal. He is also the Head of the Machining and Tribology Research Group (MACTRIB). He is Editor in Chief of six international journals, as well as being a guest editor of journals, a book editor, a book series editor and the scientific advisory for many international journals and conferences. In addition, he has authored and co-authored more than 40 book chapters and 350 articles in journals and conferences (h-index 30+).
