Description

This book develops a new vision in geomechanics which will be of interest to researchers and engineers. It begins with the key theoretical features of dissipative structures induced by elementary contact friction within geomaterials in slow motion, their multi-scale expression in key tensor relations and associated features including strain localization and shear banding.

The practical applications of the resulting macroscopic energy-dissipation equation are then developed and studied in relation to a wide set of properties that are particularly relevant to civil engineering, including:
– the failure criterion, resolving into the Coulomb criterion;
– relations between shear strength and volume changes leading to 3D stress–dilatancy relations and resolving into classical Rowe’s relations under specific conditions;
– the characteristic state;
– cyclic compaction features;
– the geostatic equilibrium (K0).

This book also includes a chapter focusing on a wide set of experimental validations collected worldwide.

It concludes by presenting key results of features resulting from particle breakage including explicit incidences relating to size effects in shear strength, slope stability and safety factors, deformations and settlements in rockfill dams.

About the authors/editors

Etienne Frossard is a widely experienced dam engineering expert, formerly Technical Director at Coyne & Bellier, and a lecturer at École Centrale Paris in France. His academic work, building on his PhD at Mines ParisTech, explores the behavior of granular geomaterials mechanics, with the intention of renewing its theorization in depth.
