Description

Bioprocesses play an important role in food processing, the pharmaceutical industry and in environmental management. Their underlying principles are based on inputs from chemical engineering, molecular biology, molecular genetics, physics, chemistry, mathematics, computer science and other engineering disciplines. Giving an overview of the challenges in the control of bioprocesses, this comprehensive book presents key results in various fields, including: dynamic modeling, dynamic properties of bioprocess models, software sensors designed for the online estimation of parameters and state variables, and control and supervision of bioprocesses.

Contents

1. What are the Challenges for the Control of Bioprocesses?, Denis Dochain.
2. Dynamic Models of Biochemical Processes: Properties of the Models,
Olivier Bernard and Isabelle Queinnec.
3. Identification of Bioprocess Models, Denis Dochain and Peter Vanrolleghem.
4. State Estimation for Bioprocesses, Olivier Bernard and Jean-Luc Gouzé.
5. Recursive Parameter Estimation, Denis Dochain.
6. Basic Concepts of Bioprocess Control, Denis Dochain and Jérôme Harmand.
7. Adaptive Linearizing Control and Extremum-seeking Control of Bioprocesses, Denis Dochain, Martin Guay, Michel Perrier and Mariana Titica.
8. Tools for Fault Detection and Diagnosis, Jean-Philippe Steyer, Antoine Génovési and Jérôme Harmand.

About the Authors

Denis Dochain is a Professor at the CESAME (Centre for Systems Engineering and Applied Mechanics) of the Université Catholique de Louvain and Honorary Research Director of the FNRS (Fonds National de la Recherche Scientifique, National Fund for Scientific Research). He is associate editor of Automatica, the IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control and the Journal of Process Control. The author is also a member of the Advisory Board of the Canadian Journal of Chemical Engineering and chairs the IFAC Coordinating Committee on Process and Power Systems.
