This book describes how nucleation and growth control the morphology and related characteristics of metallic thin films and nanoparticles (NPs), and in turn their functional properties.
These mechanisms condition the microstructure and related properties of thin coatings, or the morphology and size of metallic NPs. In both cases, an in-depth understanding is required to control the nucleation and growth of condensed phases from liquid solutions. Here the author reviews theoretical aspects of these methods, deriving the basic equations of nucleation from fundamental thermodynamic and kinetic relations. The practical outcomes of these theories, and their impacts on process performance, are then illustrated through up-to-date industrially relevant examples.

About the Authors

Paul-Henri Haumesser is a scientist at CEA Leti in Grenoble, France. He is developing metallization processes for various technological applications including microprocessors and solar cells. These processes are based on the electrochemical or electroless deposition of metals as well as the controlled precipitation of metallic nanoparticles.
